My father was a proud man. Always polished, always professional. As the author of 54 Years on Wall Street, he held himself to the highest standards and believed deeply in presenting his best self. But after his fall, everything became more complicated.
The injury left him with cognitive challenges, and soon, he required skilled care. What we encountered was heartbreaking: overworked staff, rushed routines, and a profound lack of compassion. The man who once stood so tall was reduced to a room, a schedule, and a chart.
It wasn’t enough. Not for him, and not for any family.
What began as a simple effort to supplement his care became something much deeper. With just a little more time, attention, and genuine presence, I watched a transformation take place. Small acts like conversation, patience, kindness all brought him back to life. He smiled more. He felt seen again. He regained his dignity.
That experience changed everything.
